Howdy frans! I thought it’d be fun to do a series on the stories behind the tracks on Stages (be sure to download the album for FREE if you haven’t already!). It IS a concept album after all. It tells the story of a failed relationship from a very personal perspective. Today’s track – “This is the Last Time”.
Previous Song Stories:
Stages Song Stories vol. 1 – BTW/Love Will Find Me
Stages Song Stories vol. 2 – The One That Got Away
Stages Song Stories vol. 3 – All In/Questions
Stages Song Stories vol. 4 – Promise in the Pain
This is the Last Time (Stage 6 – post-breakup; bitterness, general pissed-offedness)
This is the angry song. I’ve heard there are stages of grief, so I suppose this was to be expected. A lot of the bitterness was at myself; at my situation. It’s also a declaration that I will make better decisions in the future and not let myself get caught up in the idea of a relationship. This goes back to making good decisions and not trying to make myself “whole” via another person. Just call me Faily McGee for trying that again. But as the song says, this is the last time.
I think my favorite thing about this song is that I sing “Oooooooohhhh” or “Yeeeaaaaahhh” more than I sing actual words. Oh wells, I like it! This song also holds the distinction of being the band’s favorite song to play live. Basically, we just beat the crap out of our instruments and I yell things into the mic for awhile. That’s always fun. I love the haunting progression and the mood of the whole tune. And at the end, there is a reprise of “Love Will Find Me” that completes the album proper. I love how that turned out! (Note: there is a postlude on the album called “Love Anyway”, but that doesn’t count)
Lyrics:
I fell so fast
Without a rhyme or a reason
This is the last time
I fell so hard
For the idea of a lover
This is the last time
Oooooooh
Just because you were the best I ever had
Doesn’t mean that you’re the best that I can get
This is the last time
Oooooooh
This is the last time
I’m right here waiting for you
and you’re waiting ’round for me too
So I won’t be looking for love
It’ll find me
You are out there

About the Stages EP: Practically everyone has experienced a failed romantic relationship. At every phase of Matt Adler’s own past failed relationship, he wrote a song. These tunes have been compiled into an indie rock EP – Stages. Through this album, the listener is able to gain insight into all phases: contentment and non-expectation, excitement and relational discovery, enamor, the end, bitterness, recovery, confidence in the future, and hope.
So many folks are in similar seasons of life. The hope and prayer is that these songs can speak to people, wherever they may be. It’s important to realize that you are not alone. You are never the only person that goes through something. And ultimately, for most, only one dating experience will ever actually be a success. It’s the failures that make you more aware of what you do need and want for your life. Your person is out there, living his/her life right now. You’re not going to miss him/her, so be patient and know that you are loved.
Best friends came together to arrange this album and to define a brand new sound, infusing indie rock and organic elements with electronic drums and soundscapes. Fans of Gungor, Imagine Dragons, The Afters, and Muse will enjoy this album. Download the album for FREE here!
