I Just Love This World Too Much… (Song Story #4)

“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”
- Acts 1:11
Just like 2,000 years ago, we find ourselves in a space where we are waiting longingly for our savior. We are desperate. We are broken. And it is so against our nature to find a way to openly admit our weaknesses and needs. Sometimes we may not even recognize that we have them to begin with. I can speak from personal experience – I sometimes find myself complacent. And I sometimes find myself thinking I am completely satisfied and fulfilled by the distractions of this world.

I mean, things are great right?! Stuff! All the things! I have a car, and a house in a cool area of the city… And video games are awesome. And indie rock concerts. And Mexican food… Now please don’t get me wrong. I freaking LOVE Mexican food. And all those other things. But hear this: they could never bring me true joy. And they should not be what defines me, even though sometimes they are. I can only experience true joy in Christ Jesus and I should be totally and completely defined by my faith in Him. I am a child of God, one whose love I couldn’t earn. There is no greater love than a man lay down his life for his friends. And He pursued me unto death on a cross, so I could be reconciled to Him and have a personal relationship with Him. I love Jesus. Unabashedly and unashamedly so. Therefore, shouldn’t I be defined by the outpouring of love, service, and hospitality that flows through me as a result of my love for Jesus? With all this earthly “stuff” so readily available at my fingertips, it can be a struggle.

“King Jesus” is track 6 on the upcoming #ScatteredAlbum. It was written during Advent 2014 (actually the day after Advent 2014 ended. Dagnabbit! I had to wait a WHOLE YEAR to sing it at my church! Not really… but kinda) and is a declaration of my desperation for Jesus; an expression of my desire for Christ to return. It discusses the dichotomy in which I sometimes live my day-to-day: my hope is built on nothing less than Christ the Son, yet I sometimes just love this world too much. My prayer is that God keep my heart focused on what is right and true, and not the distractions of the flesh.

-Matt
“For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”
- 1 Corinthians 11:26
Lyrics:

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Christ the son, and righteousness
Grant that I might feel Your love
And set my heart on things above

Please come soon, soon, Emmanuel
Soon, soon, King Jesus
Deliver us

A stranger here of flesh and bone
This world I see is not my home
Your calling Lord is greater still
I’ll live for Yours, and not my will

Please come soon, soon, Emmanuel
Soon, soon, King Jesus
Deliver us

Yours is the kingdom
Yours is the power
Yours is the glory
Forever

Waiting here expectantly
Your kingdom come for all to see
Until that day, my heart will seek
Your grace and truth alive in me

Please come soon, soon, Emmanuel
Soon, soon, Jesus
Please come soon, soon, Emmanuel
Soon, soon, King Jesus
Deliver us
