Matt Adler Nicolette Good = Win, Lose or Draw

Hi all! Merry Christmas! Have a free single! Read on...

A couple months back I played a show at Jack’s with Meiko and Bobby Long. Local support for the show was me and a girl named Nicolette Good. I had seen her name a bajillion times within the SA singer/songwriter circle but I had not yet had an opportunity to meet or hear her. I was definitely excited that we were finally on a bill together!

I played my 40 minute set (with the lovely Dave Brent, cajonist extraordinaire) and left the stage to sell CDs, make friends and otherwise schmooze the local populace. I was talking to a girl that had just bought a CD when Nicolette started her set. Within 30 seconds I dropped everything and sat my booty down to enjoy the aural bliss coming through the speakers. She blew my mind and I knew we had to collaborate on something!

I approached her afterward and asked her if she’d be interested in writing/recording a song together and she said “yes”! And now here we are.

The song came together fairly quickly. We only needed four sessions to write and record basic tracks. The first day, we spent two hours writing the piano part and getting that recorded. The next two sessions were lyric-writing sessions. This was the first time either of us had done a true 50%-50% collaboration with another artist, so there was a little bit of a learning curve but for the most part it was smooth sailing. I couldn’t be happier with the final tune! “Win, Lose or Draw” feels very much like a departure from both my and Nicolette’s songwriting style, but I love the quirky, happy, bubbly and bouncy nature of the song. I hope you do too.

Consider this an early Christmas gift. Download a free copy of “Win, Lose or Draw” from our Noisetrade site today!

Lyrics

I’ve always played my cards right
Did not think twice, I rolled the dice
When our worlds collided
Our back and forth turned down upside
My deck was stacked, when I realized
It could be love
or maybe she’s just polite?

I laid my cards out in front of me, for all to see
You kept your heart up your sleeve, away from me
Let’s settle the score now, once and for all
Win, lose or draw?

My luck’s never been so bad
Yours was the hand I couldn’t have
Now my heart’s divided
I thought of backing away
players only get played
but losers never strike big
on bets they never make

I laid my cards out in front of me, for all to see
You kept your heart up your sleeve, away from me
Let’s settle the score now, once and for all
Win, lose or draw?

Time’s running out and I’m calling your bluff
Without a doubt, can’t you see that I’m all in?

I laid my cards out in front of me, for all to see
You wore your heart on your sleeve, just for me
We’ve settled the score now, let the games begin
You win, you win
