Happy New Year! What’s In Store? #ScatteredAlbum

Greetings and salutations friends, well-wishers, and not-so-well-wishers! And happiest of new years to you all! It’s been a long time since I’ve been blogalicious, but there is a lot coming down the pike so I wanted to provide an update. Here ’tis!

I miss Calvin and Hobbes.

2015 was the best year yet. Got engaged. Pursued my calling to full-time ministry as Director of Contemporary Worship at University United Methodist in San Antonio. Began work on a new full-length album (#ScatteredAlbum ftwwww) with my best friends. Turned 30 (freaked out about this initially… then I realized the 30s are the same as your 20s except you know more stuff and are more financially stable).

2016 stands to be even better. I marry the love of my life this summer! And the new album will be completed and released, accompanied by a proverbial slew of shows. There are quite a few vertical worship songs on this album and I’m excited to play them at churches and camps around the region! There are also a lot of up-tempo tunes. Some rock-y tunes. Some technical/progressive elements. Some indie stuff. We are super pumped to play these songs live! But first things first: we will be releasing the first single from the new album within the next month. Huzzah! So keep your eyes peeled!

The illustrious David Brent (@davidbrentdrums of Madler Band lore, not The Office [UK] fame) has tracked all of his drum parts.

Bass, keys, vocals and guitars have been tracked for a few songs as well. I’d say the album is 35% done. But we are kicking things into high gear! Right now we are shooting for an April release and more specifics are forthcoming. Teaser photos, videos, audios, song stories, and other content will be posted frequently so keep checking all the standard social media outlets for the latest scoop –

2) Scattered
3) Enjoy the Silence
4) On My Way To You
5) Only You
6) King Jesus
7) Kyrie
8) Alpha and Omega

10) Love Like You Love Me
11) Doxology

Thank you to everyone who made 2015 so special. My hope and prayer is that each and every person reading this has a spectacular 2016, filled with joy and love. I’m excited to see what the year has in store.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
-Jeremiah 29:11-13

-Matt

“Why do we gather when we should be Scattered?” (Song Story #3)

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
-Matthew 28:19-20

I was raised in the church. Growing up as a child (heck, even into my adult years), I always thought that being a Christian meant 1) going to church and 2) being nice to people. No one had ever shared with me what a Gospel of Grace was. I had heard the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) but never really thought about what it said. I understood what it meant to be nice to people, but I didn’t really engage in true service of my neighbor, nor a true relationship with the risen Christ. And “make disciples”? Surely this was someone else’s responsibility! I mean… there has to be “a guy” for that, right?

At the end of the day, I can honestly say that much of my community at that time lived in a similar space. We would go to work/school and then reconvene each and every Sunday. We would sing a few songs and exchange a few pleasantries. Then it was back to the ol’ grindstone until seven days later, when the pattern repeated.

But we aren’t called to simply go to church. We are called to make disciples of all the nations. We are called to serve each other and truly love our neighbors as ourselves, being concerned over every facet of their well-being as we are for our own. Now don’t get me wrong, the church service is beautiful and one of my favorite things in life. And it is incredibly necessary for realignment of hearts, learning, fellowship, celebrating, offering of our gifts and time through multiple expressions of worship… but the gathering isn’t the end of it. After all, Light shines brightest in the darkest places.

I’d like to say that I’m the perfect embodiment of what we as Christians are called to be. But far from it. I strive daily, but I definitely struggle. “Scattered” is the title track of our upcoming album and is about this very thing. It is about a desire to pursue God’s will for my life, even knowing how difficult it can be. It’s a prayer that God would take me out of my comfort zone and help me lay down my own passions and pursuits for Something greater. It’s an admission that I so easily find myself with a platform only to tell my own story and enjoy my time in the spotlight, rather than redirecting eyes to Christ. I want all that I do to bring glory to God. And I want to go where He would have me to serve and be who I’m called to be – not just on Sundays, but each and every day. It’s humbling and a pure blessing that God would use each and every one of us for His kingdom. I pray that I never ever miss an opportunity.

-Matt

For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
-Galatians 5:13

Lyrics:
I want to be a light
A spark of day within the night
Not to “come and see”, but “go and be”
I want to hear Your call
Not stay the same, but give my all
to Something more than me
Why do we gather
when we should be scattered?

Take me, shape me
Bend and break me
No matter what You need
Here I am, send me

It’s not what I can do
Less of me and more of You
Complacency is easy, honestly
Help me feel out of place
To walk in the rhythms of Your grace
Be a light unto my city
Why do we gather
when we should be scattered?

Take me, shape me
Bend and break me
No matter what You need
Here I am, send me
Please use me
I choose to be Yours
However more You ask of me

I’ll tell Your story
and not my own
Let me bring glory
to You and You alone

Take me, shape me
Bend and break me
No matter what You need
Here I am, send me
Please use me
I choose to be Yours
However more You ask of me
Here I am, send me

Why do we gather
when we should be scattered?

Help Me To “Enjoy The Silence” (Song Story #2)

waves

I will meditate on Your precepts and fix my eyes on Your ways.
-Psalms 119:15

As a believer in Jesus Christ as my savior, I am called to live a life of service. A life of love. A life of obedience. I am called to look to the Father for guidance. I would like to be able to say that I am the “perfect Christian” that spends time daily in prayer and digging into the Word, pursuing my walk with excitement and diligence.

But you know what? Technology happens. Hobbies happen. Relationships happen. Careers happen. Social events happen. Back to back; one right after the other. And before I know it, hours have passed, it’s getting late, and boy am I tired. So maybe I skip out on opening my Bible or spending time in prayer. I definitely enjoy these distractions, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with them. In fact, they can be very life giving. But once these distractions take over my life and I place them in a position of higher importance than my spiritual walk, they become a problem. They become idols.

As humans, we are attracted to new things. When I first became a Christian I was on FIRE for God. As the newness wore off, more and more I found my desire to pursue Him overshadowed by some fleeting distraction. “Enjoy the Silence” is track 4 of the upcoming #ScatteredAlbum. It is simply a prayer, “God – help me to slow down, to focus on the things of You, to enjoy the silence, and give You my undivided attention. Take me back to the start.”

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
-1 Corinthians 10:13

I must not forget.

-Matt

PS – Lainey Wright tracked a guest vocal for this song, and as always she KILLED it. I am super excited to share this tune with the world! Thank you Lainey!

Lyrics:
Why can’t I slow down?
Where is my rest?
The sights and the sounds, they are always around
Vying for my attention
Every distraction
pulls me from You
They’re truly unnerving, yet so undeserving
God, give me strength to pull through

And learn to enjoy the silence
And still my aching heart
Help me be quiet
Take me back to the start

When I first had found You,
You were all that I had
All that I needed, but others competed
Do I love them instead?

Help me to enjoy the silence
And still my aching heart
Help me be quiet
Take me back to the start

Scattered Album Track List Revealed! + Song Story #1

Hi all! My goodness gracious, it’s been forever. In case you haven’t noticed, the band (Tony, Dave, other Dave, and Katie) has been laying low the last couple months while I’ve been focusing on some other areas of my life (proposing to my best gal, planning said wedding, and transitioning into a new full-time Worship Director position will do that to ya!). However, we are once again ready to kick things into high gear!

Matt Adler Band

Even though gigs have been scarce the last couple of months (though, mark your calendars for October 2nd at The Block Food Truck Park near UTSA!), we have been working hard on our upcoming “Scattered” full length album. As it sits today, the final track list for Scattered is as follows –

1) On My Way To You
2) Scattered

4) Enjoy the Silence
5) Only You
6) King Jesus
7) Kyrie
8) Love Like You Love Me
9) All For You (Psalm 62)

As we count down the months and weeks until the release of this record, I’ll be posting song stories, interesting tid bits, factoids, and a vast panoply of other content and bloggy blogs (perhaps a video on what the word “panoply” means). Song Story #1 – On My Way To You

Written on: July 30th, 2015

Story:
This is a love song of sorts. The Scattered LP is an overtly Christian record, with lots of spiritual and vertical worship songs. In fact, On My Way To You is the only lovey dovey tune! It’s about missing your loved ones. It’s about distance. It’s about longing. The concept for this song came about during my 2014 Stages EP tour. I was missing my then girlfriend (now-fiance!) and I found myself with butterflies, in anticipation of seeing her again! I was driving back from New Mexico and all I could think of was “I’m on my way to see her! It won’t be long now!”.

As of today, believe it or not – the band hasn’t even heard this song yet! It’s pretty new. I’m very excited about it. It’s likely going to be the heaviest tune we have ever tracked and will work really well as a concert opener and closer. Lots of energy in this one! There’s even a progressive, heavy instrumental break down in the middle. Can’t wait to get this one recorded! We’ll have our work cut out for us. It’s a tough one!

Lyrics:
It’s been such a long time
that I only see you in my dreams
For some reason this time
it’s harder without you next to me

I’m missing you today
And though you’re worth the wait
It’s hard to do
Finally I’m on my way back to you

On my way to you
Yes I’m on my way to you

Sitting in silence
Your memory’s but a photograph
Tortuous distance
What I would give to make you laugh

I’m missing you today
And though you’re worth the wait
It’s hard to do
Finally I’m on my way back

On my way to you
Yes I’m on my way to you
Here I come

On my way to you
Yes I’m on my way to you
On my way to you
Yes I’m on my way to you
Here I come
Here I come
